Educating our Children: Part Two
by Rebecca McAllister

Schooling at home is legal in every state. Though the regulations vary, you have the right to teach your children, with the curriculum, reading and text books and views of your own choosing.

All good parents teach at home...I just chose to do it full-time!

As parents, we teach our child from the moment of birth. We teach them to walk, talk, potty train and have manners. We teach them please, thank you and to hold hands while crossing the street. We are the ultimate teachers, we know our children better than anyone else. Teaching them to read, write and count, is possible. We direct their education by being their resource, their tutor and their mentor.

Some people shouldn't homeschool. It may be due to a short temper, or family problems or a lack of dedication to follow through. In which case, public or private schools may be in the best interest of your child or children. This is a matter that you will need to take up in prayer. Other options may better suit your children's needs as a family situation.

Some children should be homeschooled, social butterflies and class clowns can learn to dedicate the appropriate time for learning, at home, one on one, and spend their social time in appropriate settings. Children that learn differently, those that are slower or gifted, should have the opportunity to proceed at the pace or learning style that is appropriate for them. It's a sad day when children are held back when they have a desire to learn or because they are reading and the kindergarten class is still learning their A,B,C's. It is even sadder when, little Joe doesn't understand the science lab and the teacher doesn't have time to explain it to him because they have a schedule to keep or 20 other children needing or wanting attention. Joe just fell through the cracks of the educational system and he may never understand that science experiment. At home, Joe can repeat that experiment again, ask questions for the next five hours and mom or Dad can provide other materials to help him understand.

Parents that choose to homeschool their child or children do need dedication to fulfill the educational needs of their children. The possibilities and variety of materials are endless. From extremely low cost to fairly pricey, home education and the materials to teach can be custom fit to your child or children. Homeschool is not something for the rich or middle class or even just the college educated . Children can reach high levels of learning and have unlimited potential by teaching them that learning is fun, not boring. Learning is a lifelong ambition and education is the foundation of living a truly fulfilling life. We learn every day and it isn't boring. Our children should enjoy lessons, not wait for recess or lunch and glide through school because they are required to attend.

In an effort to teach our children the values and rewards of simple living, our believes are often overpowered by the commercial and social norms subjected on our children by peers, teachers and administrators. This is part two of an ongoing series regarding the traditional school system and an alternative Christian education.
