Wash Day: Today is Monday...
by Rebecca McAllister

With so many products on the market for every cleaning job, wouldn't it be nice to narrow down your selection and use some of the items you have on hand. In addition to saving a few dollars every week, many of these are just as effective or sometimes even better than the name brand items. Here are some low cost, effective solutions!

Do your clothes need softening? Vinegar is by far the best way to soften your clothes. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the final rinse cycle for normal loads; one cup for bulky blankets or quilts.

Baking soda is another way to soften clothes. 3 tablespoons in a small sock; throw it in with the wash.

Make your own fabric softener with this recipe. * 2 Cups White Vinegar * 2 Cups Baking Soda * 4 Cups Water Combine slowly and carefully over sink. The baking soda and vinegar will fizz. Pour into plastic bottle, cover, and shake. Use 1/4 cup in the final rinse or in a fabric softener ball.

Cut your dryer sheets in half. They work just as well and you get twice as much for the price.

Use a washcloth with some fabric softener. Toss it into the dryer with each load. If the washcloth still has softener on it, you can sprinkle or dampen it with water and toss it in with the next load. You can also make a solution of 1/3 cup of fabric softener to one cup of water, dip and squeeze an old washcloth or fabric square into the solutions and throw it into the dryer. Don't make too much of this as it will become slimy over time.

This is not a softener, but does get rid of static cling. Use a 5 in. square piece of aluminum foil with your next load. You can get 5-7 load out of the foil before you need to replace it. After each load is done, the foil will probably be in a ball; just smooth it out for the next load.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes. Exodus 19:10
